Great is Thy Faithfulness was written in the year 1923 by Thomas Chisholm. He was a teacher and a minister in the Methodist Church who lived in Kentucky, United States. Chisholm originally wrote the words as a poem as inspired by Lamentations 3:23 which states, “They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (ESV).
After writing the amazing poem, he sent it to his friend, William Runyan, who was a musician and composer. Fortunately, Runyan worked for Moody Bible Institute and a hymnal publishing company which enabled him to create melody for the poem thereby turning it into hymn and published in same year 1923. The hymn had long been unpopular until it was discovered in the Moody Bible Institutes archive in the 1940s. Since then, "Great is Thy Faithfulness" has been one of the most beloved hymns of the modern time.
The most amazing thing about the hymn besides its soft tune is the poetic beauty of its lyrics and how God is clearly exalted. In fact, if the saints will sing earthly songs in heaven, Great is They Faithfulness will be more than a sweet fragrance in the voice of the angels.
