Nearer My God to Thee | Hymn Lyrics, Tune and Video

Nearer My God to Thee Lyrics

1. Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

2. Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
yet in my dreams I'd be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

3. There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given;
angels to beckon me
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

4. Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
so by my woes to be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

5. Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

About the Hymn "Nearer My God to There"

Writer: Sarah Flower Adams
Year:  1841
Place: England

"Nearer my God to Thee" Hymn was composed by Sarah Adams AKA Flower. Sarah was born on February 22, 1805, at Harlow, Essex, England. She was a songwriter, poet, editor and proprietor of Cambridge Intelligencer. Some of the poetic works she published include poems such as Vivia Perpetua. She also wrote and contributed to several other hymns.

The hymn "Nearer My God to Thee" retells the story of Jacob during the night of his encounter with the angels of God that led to the changing of his name to Israel as told in Genesis 28, specifically verse 11-12.

Gen. 28 "11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it."

Nearer my God to Thee is one of the most popular hymns in Christian history and has been translated into thousands of languages and feature in several congregational hymn book. It is a song of prayer, supplication and sometimes a song in time of sorrow.

One of the most tragic moments this song has featured was in early hours of April 15, 1912, when the Titanic sank. It was the last song played by the violinist and band master, Wallace Hartley and his crew, before the Titanic finally disappeared, taking the lives of over 1500 people. The song was also featured in his funeral after his body was discovered near the Titanic shipwreck weeks later.
