O God, Our Help in Ages Past | Hymn Lyrics, Tune and Video

O God, our help in ages past Hymn Lyrics

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of thy throne,
Still may we dwell secure;
Sufficient is thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting, thou art God,
To endless years the same.

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come;
Be thou my guide while life shall last,
And our eternal home.

O God, our help in ages past Hymn Tune

About the Hymn
Songwriters: Isaac Watts, William Croft, Peter Tiefenbach.
Date: 1708
Category: Assurance and Declaration

The hymn “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” was written by Isaac Watts who lived from 1674-1748. Watt was a prominent English hymn writer and theologian. He is known as the “Father of English Hymnody” for his contribution of over 750 hymns, many of which are still sung today. Besides hymns, Isaac Watt also wrote books on logic, philosophy, and theology.

The hymn was inspired by Psalm 90, which contrasts the eternity of God with the frailty of human life. Watts wrote the hymn in 1708 as part of his collection of psalm paraphrases. The paraphrase was labeled: The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament.

The hymn originally had nine stanzas, but some of them are often omitted in modern hymnals. The hymn expresses a strong sense of trust, hope, and security in God, who is our help in the past, present, and future.

Although the hymn originally had a different tune, the tune that is most commonly used with this hymn is “St. Anne”, composed by William Croft (1678-1727), an English organist and composer. He wrote the tune in 1708 while he was the organist of St. Anne’s Church in Soho, London. The tune was first published anonymously in a supplement to the New Version of the Psalms by Nicholas Brady and Nahum Tate. The tune is named after the church where Croft worked, and has been used by other composers such as Handel, Bach, and Sullivan.

The hymn is often sung on occasions of remembrance and thanksgiving, but it is a song of assurance and confidence in God. It strongly affirms God’s faithfulness and providence throughout history, today and forever more.
